Zinc oxide, also known as zinc white or calamine, is a chemical compound with zinc in its +2 oxidation state. As such, it is an amphoteric oxide. More commonly, zinc oxide refers to metal oxides having a wide range of applications including use as a food additive and as a topical emollient in some pharmaceutical ointments. The most common application of zinc oxide is for sunscreen products due to its excellent UV-absorbing properties. In amounts between 10% and 25%, zinc oxide will protect skin from UV rays more effectively than many other sunscreens that rely on titanium dioxide alone to block those wavelengths. It's also used in paints and coatings as a pigment and opacifier, e.g., for house paint and primer paints.

Uses of Zinc Oxide from Zinc Dross
Zinc oxide is one of these oxides that has many uses. For example, it can be used as an ingredient in toothpaste, sunscreen and food additives such as gelatin capsules, marshmallows and dietary supplements. Zinc oxide is used for making certain types of paint, putty and rubber products. It’s also used in plastics manufacturing along with other chemicals like sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and pyridine. It is also applied in the areas of cosmetics, electronics industry and nuclear technology.

White seal or zinc oxide is commonly found in nature as it forms naturally during weathering and aging of minerals containing metallic ions such as iron and copper. These minerals are often found near salt deposits which contain sulfate-reducing bacteria. The process by which white seal forms is called leaching wherein metals react with sulfate-reducing bacteria present on limestone rocks to form insoluble metal sulfates including zinc salts.

Manufacturing
The process begins with white seal dross which is loaded into a jaw crusher and ground. The resultant powder is put through a magnetic separator to remove any remaining steel or other ferrous metals. A water spray, blast of air or belt dryer will then be used to remove moisture from it. The residual particles are dried in an oven or furnace until they reach a sufficiently low level. This can take from several hours to several days depending on their state of hydration. They are subsequently crushed again into smaller pieces. The resulting product is called zinc lone (zinc oxide). It may then be mixed with magnesium oxide to form magnesium zinc oxide, its main use as a refractory material for high temperature furnaces and kilns.
